The nobility of Freisa is confirmed by genetic analyses, which have revealed a first-degree relationship with Nebbiolo, leading to the hypothesis that Freisa originated from a spontaneous crossing between Nebbiolo and another, now lost or still unknown, parent. This detail adds prestige to a grape variety that, over the years, has suffered some devaluation due to its rustic nature. Resistant to diseases and highly productive, these traits were valued by farmers, who encouraged its cultivation even in challenging areas where grapes did not always reach optimal ripeness. A variety with great potential, Freisa is used to produce wines in different styles: a bold, long-lived still wine or a lighter, slightly lively version best enjoyed young, rather than aged.
